I was so excited to be asked to be part of the blog tour for lovely Sylvia Bishop’s Erica’s Elephant!
Erica’s Elephant is released on2nd June 2016 published in hardback by Scholastic and is MG Magical Realism aimed at 6 – 8 year olds and beyond.
This book is stunningly gorgeous and with illustrations by Ashley King I cannot wait to jump in and read this!

When Erica Perkins wakes up on the morning of her tenth birthday, the last thing she expects is to find a very confused elephant sitting on her doorstep. So begins an unlikely friendship. But can a small girl and a rather large elephant learn to live together in a tiny terraced house? And when the dastardly owner of the local zoo plots to steal the elephant, will Erica be able to outsmart him?
What would Sylvia do if an Elephant turned up on her doorstep!
Some people base their protagonists on themselves. I have definitely not done this. When Erica finds a confused Elephant on her doorstep, she welcomes him inside, and sorts him out. If I found an elephant on my doorstep, I would do the following, in no particular order: panic, call my mum, apologise at length to the neighbours, freak out, make a fortifying cup of tea, lose all my marbles at once, google elephant-on-doorstep hoaxes, and dither at length.
None of this would be useful or kind, but I think it’s the truth. Being brutally honest, the story of Sylvia’s Elephant would be very short, and involve a lot of hand-waving and confusion.
While I don’t think I have ever lived up to Erica, I have definitely been the Elephant. Most people probably have: he is confused and alone in a new place and not quite sure what to do with himself. That must cover pretty much everyone at some point. It’s a problem, I think, that we have a lot more Elephants than Ericas.
Ask me this again in five years, and maybe I will have got my act together enough to say: “I would find a sensible way to generously look after the Elephant. By the time I opened the door and found him there I would be in tiptop thinking mode, because I would already have had a really sorted, adult start to my day. Like, I wouldn’t have slept through my alarm repeatedly. And I would definitely have had enough milk for my breakfast, because I always remember to keep a spare bottle in the freezer so that I never run short. And I would be wearing a pair of socks that matched. So I would be feeling Alert and Wise, and I would sort out something very responsible to do about the “friendless-Elephant-situation.”
On second thoughts, you might need to give me ten years before that happens.
